Interview with Laurel Bradley

When did you first start writing? What keeps you doing it?
I started writing long before I ever put pen to paper. My parents read to me a lot when I was a child, but it was never enough. After I’d been put to bed, I’d make up stories until I fell asleep. Writing was the natural next step. I keep writing because I love being able to “be” all the characters. I’m the princess, the dragon and the knight when I write.

When you first started writing, what was your biggest shock and/or realization about the publishing industry? My biggest shock was how hard it is to get published. Somehow I thought I could simply hand my complete manuscript to a publisher to get it published. I was very naïve. The second biggest shock about the industry was marketing. I learned that no matter who the publisher is, it is the author who is ultimately in charge of promotion.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received about writing? Follow your dream and don’t give up.

What advice do you have for new writers (if different than above)?
Ask for help. Every published author was once an unpublished wannabe. If you have specific questions, ask them.

Where do you find your inspiration for your stories? Everywhere. Literally. A conversation with a friend about infertility prompted (A Wish in Time) a time travel romance where the quest of a child causes two women to unexpectedly switch places in time. Gourmet ice cream and Cervantes’ Don Quixote prompted Crème Brûlée Upset. To watch a short book trailer of either of these go to www.laurelbradley.com

Please tell us about your newest release Crème Brûlée Upset. Crème Brûlée Upset is a fun and funny contemporary romance from The Wild Rose Press. It’s available as an eBook at the moment, but will be in print July 25, 2008.

When Mike Tucker dumps crème brûlée down chef Patrice Wilson’s dress whites, she knows it’s time to forget her life-long crush and move on. It isn’t until she’s no longer speaking to him that Mike realizes he’s loved her all along. His just-before-Christmas campaign to win her back involves four nosey parents, three scoops of ice cream, two other suitors and a Don Quixote singing troubadour.

Great interview, Laurel!

So, if you had it to do over, would you do something different along the way to publication? If so, what would it be?

Great interview! Laurel, in the stories I made up when I was young, I was SuperGirl. LOL

Hey, Laurel, I have to agree with it being shocking how hard it is to get your book published. I thought the same thing when I finished my first book. Before I knew ANYTHING! :) And, boy, we got smacked upside the head pretty quick, didn't we? (in a nice way, of course. LOL)

Jacquie,
If I had to do it all over, I'd become active in RWA earlier to accelerate the learning curve.

Edie,
SuperGirl, huh? That's fun. For me it varied just as my writing genres do today. Not only did I get to be the princess, knight and dragon, I got to be the magician, the teacher, the professional figure skater...you name it.

Stacey,
Sometimes the learning curve is a little rough, but hard work makes success all the sweeter. Don't you think?

Laurel,
I knew the whole process of writing would be very tough. I didn't want to get started because I only wanted to read. My dh thought I should do something worthwhile and to him reading didn't accomplish anything, so he thought I should write. lol Boy, is he sorry now. I don't have time for him, and I can't quit. lol

I was Little Joe's girlfriend when I was young.

Jacquie Rogers asked a good question. Would you have done something differently if you knew then what you know now?

And A Wish in Time and Creme Brule Upset are great books.

Thank you, Jane. I really enjoyed writing both A Wish in Time and Creme Brulee Upset.

If there was something I could change about the past it would be getting discovered by New York. I'd have had that happen off the bat. Actually, I haven't minded the road I've taken. I've learned a lot and met some terrific people. I'm looking forward to what the future brings.

Sandy,
LOL. Balance is such a tricky thing. Authors need to write enough to produce books in a timely fashion while maintaining healthy personal lives as well. I'm still learning how to balance the two.

Thank you, Michele and Victoria. Nice of you ladies to drop by.

Laurel, I loved Time and meeting you at WisRWA last year. You are a rare talent!! Can't wait to see this next one. Anything involving creme broule must be wonderful. ;)

I agree about the promo bit too. I HEARD all the promo advice before I was pubbed, but I didn't LISTEN. It's all true and then some.

Great interview, Laurel!

I liked how you said you wrote so you could be all the characters.
I feel the same way.

Kelly,
Thank you for the lovely comment. I'm glad you enjoyed A Wish in Time. I'll be at WisRWA again in May and hope to see you. Love your tag line: "I'm a romance writer... covermodels fall all over themselves for my approval. ;)"

It was my pleasure Laurel! I've enjoyed reading all the posts and questions and your answers. I noticed you said you would have gotten active in RWA earlier, and I have to agree whole-heartedly! That's something I wish I'd done about two years sooner :) Thanks again for taking the time to let me interview you!
